F8_002.jpg - F-8 Crusader, built by Vought, was a single seat carrier based air superiority fighter aircraft. Replaced the F-7 Cutlass and first flew with a fleet squadron in 1958 until last squadron retired from the USS Oriskany in 1976. However, the French flew them into the early 1990s and retired in 1999. Was known as the "last gunfighter" since the 20mm cannons were the primary weapon when developed although the plane carried AIM-9 Sidewinder missles in Vietnam. Of 19 MIGs downed only four where by cannon and the others Sidewinders.
